Torus Names Naveen Anand as Global Chief Operating Officer

Torus Insurance Holdings Ltd today announced the appointment of Naveen Anand as Global Chief Operating Officer. He will be based in New Jersey and will report directly to Clive Tobin, Chief Executive of Torus.

Mr. Anand will be the Chief Executive for Torus’ US operations and reporting to him will be the regional Chief Operating Officers in other countries. In addition, he will also be the Chief Underwriting Officer for US Specialty Lines.

Mr. Anand joins Torus from CNA Insurance Company where he was Senior Vice President responsible for CNA’s $3billion global commercial insurance division. Prior to this, Mr. Anand was Head of the New York region for Chubb Insurance Company.

Commenting on the appointment, Clive Tobin said “The US commercial insurance market is by far the largest and the appointment of our US Chief Executive is a critical one. We are very fortunate to have attracted somebody with Naveen’s ability and experience. I know he will do a terrific job in establishing Torus as a leading specialty insurer in the US”

Naveen Anand said “We have very ambitious plans for Torus in the US. In addition to our New Jersey and Chicago offices we will be establishing offices in Atlanta, Houston and on the West coast before year-end.  I am excited by the prospects of what we can build and delighted that I can have a major influence in shaping our US development from the beginning.”

Torus’ US Property Platform Bolstered by Senior Appointments

Torus Insurance, the global specialty insurer, today announced the appointment of William K. McArthur as Vice President, Senior Power & Utilities Underwriter, with immediate effect. McArthur will report to London-based Ben Wilson, Global Head of Torus’ Power & Utilities Practice. In addition Torus has appointed Dennis Johnson and Mark Mowinski as Vice Presidents, Senior Property Underwriters, responsible for underwriting in the Mid West. They will both report to Steve Fomchenko, Torus’ Global Head of General Property Underwriting.

McArthur, Johnson and Mowinski will be based in Torus’ new Chicago office, the opening of which continues Torus’ US expansion following the opening of a Houston office in early July.

McArthur, who is a qualified engineer, brings 40 years of extensive power & utilities experience to Torus. He joins from Lexington and has previously worked for Crum /& Forster, ACE Global Property and CIGNA. He began his career as a mechanical nuclear instructor for the U.S Navy.

Johnson joins Torus from AIG where he was AVP, regional property manager for Central United States. He has also worked for SCOR, AON and Industrial Risk Insurers during his 30 year career. Mowinski was also formerly an underwriter at Lexington and SCOR, where he began his insurance career back in 1988. He has also worked for Everest Re and CNA Insurance.

Commenting on Torus’ first US Power & Utilities appointment, Ben Wilson said: ‘Bill’s excellent track record in power & utilities underwriting coupled with his in-depth knowledge of the North American market will certainly bring us closer to brokers and clients in America. He will be a great addition to the team.’

Tim Mardon appointed as President and Chief Underwriting Officer, Torus Re

Torus Insurance Holdings Limited, the global specialist (re)insurance company, today announced the appointment of Tim Mardon as President and Chief Underwriting Officer of Torus Re with immediate effect. He will report directly to Clive Tobin, Chief Executive of Torus.

Prior to joining Torus, Mr. Mardon, who has 22 years of insurance experience, was Chief Underwriting Officer of Citadel’s Reinsurance operations (CIG Re and New Castle Re). He joined Torus in early 2009 as part of a transaction which involved Torus acquiring the staff of New Castle Re. He began his career in London where he worked as a pricing actuary for Zurich Re and Terra Nova before moving to Bermuda in 1996 to work for Ace Tempest Re in property cat and specialty underwriting.

Commenting on his immediate plans for Torus Re, Mr. Mardon said: ‘We will continue our previous trajectory by expanding our existing property catastrophe portfolio, and leverage our position within the Torus family to target international cat and retrocessional business emanating from London and European markets. The Bermuda platform will diversify to incorporate casualty and other specialty reinsurance lines as well as structured solutions.’

Clive Tobin said: ‘Establishing a specialty reinsurer is a key part of Torus’ strategic plan and Tim and his team are already making an important contribution to our performance. In addition Jon Sullivan, who will report to Tim and head up our international reinsurance book, will be moving to London in August to expand our international presence.’

Torus Strengthens US Presence with Senior Onshore Energy Appointment

Torus Insurance, the global specialty insurer, has appointed Debbie Landes as Vice President, Senior Onshore Energy Underwriter, in its recently opened Houston office, with immediate effect. Landes will report to London-based Philip Sexton, head of Torus’ Global Onshore Energy Practice. She joins Torus’ Onshore Energy Engineering Practice Leader, Peter Wong, who has been in situ since April this year.

The Houston office will initially focus on onshore energy business but will diversify its offerings over the coming months. It represents further expansion of Torus’ local “on the ground” service offering in the US, following the launch in May of Torus Specialty in New Jersey.

Landes, who has over 35 years property experience, most of which is in onshore energy, was most recently Regional Vice President of Arch Insurance Group where she managed the Houston Onshore Energy Branch Office. Prior to Arch she worked as a senior energy property underwriter for Zurich American Insurance Company and was a senior production underwriter at CIGNA/ACE.

Wong, who is a fire protection and safety engineer with over 32 years of risk control experience in the onshore energy industry, joined Torus from Markel Global Marine & Energy. He has held various positions with other primary insurance carriers and reinsurers including Liberty International Underwriters and Munich American Reinsurance Co.
