Torus Adds Dedicated US Property Claims Service

Torus, the global specialty insurer, has strengthened its property services offering in the US through the appointment of Paul Lafferty as Vice President, Property Claims Manager, with immediate effect. This follows the announcement last week of the parallel appointment of Charles Stauber as Head of Torus’ US casualty claims. Based in Torus’ New Jersey office, Mr. Lafferty is responsible for all US property claims services.

Mr. Lafferty joins Torus from Starr Technical Risks Agency where he was most recently Executive General Adjuster responsible for delivering claims services to insureds throughout the major insurance markets worldwide. He has gained further extensive experience in handling claims for major catastrophes throughout his 23 year career at AIG Global Energy, FM Global, Arkwright Mutual Insurance and Factory Mutual.

Torus Adds US and UK Casualty Services

Torus, the global specialty insurer, has appointed Charles E. Stauber as Vice President – Head of Casualty Claims, with immediate effect. Mr. Stauber, who has over 22 years’ experience managing and resolving complex casualty claims in the insurance industry, will oversee casualty claims in the US, supporting both Global Casualty and Global Specialty from Torus’ New Jersey office. 

In addition, Alison Timson has been appointed as Assistant Vice President for US Casualty. Based in London she will develop and underwrite US business from UK brokers.

Mr. Stauber was most recently President and owner of Stauber Associates LLC, a risk management and consulting company specialising in property and casualty. An Associate Member of the American Bar Association (ABA), a member of the National Structure Settlement Trade Association (NSSTA) and a Member of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDDC), he has also worked at Liberty Mutual, Travelers, AIG, Investors and ACE USA, where he held a variety of claim management and executive positions. Prior to his insurance career, Charles was a Sergeant in United States Marine Corp.

Miss Timson has over ten years of experience in Umbrella and Excess Casualty, including Real Estate, Construction, Energy, Utilities and Chemicals in both the London and US insurance markets. She joins Torus from Willis.

Torus Appoints Senior Treaty Casualty Reinsurance Underwriter

Torus Re, the reinsurance arm of global specialty insurer, Torus, has appointed David Whiting as Senior Casualty Reinsurance Underwriter, with immediate effect. In this role Mr. Whiting is responsible for all of Torus Re’s casualty underwriting and reports directly to Tim Mardon, Torus Re’s President and Chief Underwriting Officer. He is based in Torus’ Bermuda office.

Prior to Torus, Mr. Whiting was most recently President and Chief Executive Officer of Wind River Reinsurance Company Ltd, Bermuda, where he was responsible for all non-US operations of the group. David has also held senior positions at Swiss Re, Zurich Insurance Group, the Hartford Insurance Group, Tillinghast, Quanta and the Centre Reinsurance Companies.

A mathematics graduate from the University of Waterloo and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), David is also a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, the Society of Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS).

Commenting on this strategic appointment, Mr. Mardon said: “David is a seasoned veteran with a track record of developing a profitable casualty portfolio across market cycles. We recognise the current competitive trends in the casualty market, but as the market improves, as we expect it to, we will be in a position to respond. To this end the unit will be making several further key appointments in the near future.”

Torus Expands Global Onshore Energy Team

Torus, the global specialty insurer, continues to build its onshore energy team with the appointments of Onshore Energy Underwriter, Amanda Ewen, and Risk Engineer, Mohammed Hanif. Based in London, each brings extensive global downstream expertise to the existing team and will report to Torus’ Head of Global Onshore Energy, Philip Sexton.

Miss Ewen joins Torus from Marsh where she was Vice President of the intermediary’s energy practice specifically focusing on oil, gas and petrochemical companies in the Middle East and North African region. Prior to Marsh, Miss Ewen spent seven years at Allianz as a Downstream Energy Underwriter.

Dr. Hanif was most recently at ARM Ltd, the risk management company of United Insurance Brokers (UIB), where he was Principal Risk Engineer. He has also worked at Attock Refinery Ltd, Universal Oil Products, Chemoxy International and British Nuclear Fuels.
