Torus Appoints Thomas Guesde to Lead European Casualty

Following the launch of Continental European operations in September 2009, Torus, the global specialty insurer, has appointed Thomas Guesde as Senior Vice President of its new European Casualty platform. Reporting to David Perez, President and CUO Global Casualty, Mr. Guesde is initially based in Torus’ new Amsterdam office, pending the opening of a Paris office later this year.

With limits of up to €25 million the new platform is available on both a primary and excess basis with the capacity to write most classes, from large, global, complex risks to European middle market business. Most policy forms can be followed in several European languages.

Formerly Director of GAN Eurocourtage’s Casualty Underwriting and International Departments, Mr. Guesde brings over 17 years of highly technical casualty underwriting and customer management experience to Torus.

Mr. Perez said: “The establishment of an underwriting operation in Europe is designed to enhance the global footprint of Torus Casualty, entertain opportunities accessible only through a local presence and assist in the diversification of our overall portfolio by responding to the specific needs of our customers in Continental Europe. Torus Adds UK Property Team

David Ring has today joined Torus, the global specialty insurer, to lead its newly created London-based general property team. As UK Head of General Property, David is responsible for managing and growing the UK and European general property underwriting portfolio. Reporting to Mr. Ring, Kelly Sanders and Chris Ray have been appointed as Senior Underwriters.

Prior to Torus, Mr. Ring was at RSA for over 20 years in a variety of property underwriting roles around the world, including the UK, Europe and North America. Most recently he was head of commercial lines underwriting for the insurer’s international businesses, which included Canada, Scandinavia, Italy and Ireland, having spent two years in Denmark as Global Property Portfolio Manager for the insurer’s Nordic business.

Kelly Sanders joins Torus from FM Global where, as Account Manager, she was the key interface with clients and brokers for insurance products and services, engineering and claims services. Prior to FM Global she was Property Underwriter for Vero Insurance.

Chris Ray joins from HDI Gerling Industrial Insurance Company where he was Senior Global Property Underwriter. With over 30 years’ property underwriting experience in total, Mr Ray, spent the majority of his career at AXA Corporate Solutions, reaching the position of Senior International Property Underwriter in 1999.

Torus to Write Healthcare

Torus today announced the appointment of Bob Allen as US Head of Healthcare, effective immediately. With 20 years of healthcare liability experience, Mr. Allen will oversee all of Torus’ US medical professional liability underwriting, reporting directly to Dermot O’Donohoe, Chief Underwriting Officer for Global Specialty. He is based in Torus’ Jersey City office.

Prior to Torus, Mr. Allen was most recently Vice President of Healthcare with Allied World Assurance (US), where he was responsible for the medical professional liability product line. Bob has held senior underwriting positions at Zurich Insurance, U.S. RE and AIG. He has also held healthcare brokerage positions with Marsh and Johnson & Higgins.

Mr. Allen is a psychology graduate from the University of Virginia and an active member of the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS).

Commenting on this strategic appointment, Mr. O’Donohoe said: “We have ambitious plans to build a significant specialty business. The US operations will offer professional liability solutions to hospital systems of all sizes, miscellaneous outpatient facilities, senior living institutions, medical tourism facilitators, physician groups and independent research sites. Our value proposition will focus on coverage enhancements coupled with risk services.”

Renewable Energy Casualty Team joins Torus

Angie Adams, Adam Newman and Wayne Jacobson, a renewable energy underwriting team since 2002, today join global specialty insurer Torus to write primary lines of general liability and auto liability for renewable energy. Based in New Jersey the team will also have umbrella and excess capacity. Ms Adams will lead the team as Senior Vice President, with Mr. Newman and Mr. Jacobson joining as Vice Presidents. They join Torus from HSBC Intermediary Solutions, which they helped to create in 2006, having originally worked together in AIG’s Global Energy Middle Market (GEMM) division.

Ms Adams was formerly President of HSBC Intermediary Solutions. She has over 20 years of experience in various production and management roles within the specialty insurance arena, focussing on technology and energy related risks. As well as HSBC and AIG, she has also worked at LK Lloyd and Marsh.

Mr. Newman was most recently Senior Vice President of HSBC Intermediary Solutions. Before moving to AIG, Mr. Newman created Strategic Alliance Partners Inc. in 2001, providing personal lines insurance across Northeast America. He also worked at Northwestern Mutual/Robert W. Baird Securities.

Mr. Jacobson was most recently Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer of HSBC Intermediary Solutions. Since 1977 he has served in various underwriting and management capacities within the property and casualty (re)insurance industry, beginning his career with Continental Insurance Company.

Torus Appoints Jackie Richardson as SVP, Head of Global Human Resources

Torus, the global specialty insurer, has named Jackie Richardson as SVP, Head of Global Human Resources, starting today. Reporting to Global Chief Operating Officer, Naveen Anand, Ms Richardson will implement and lead the Human Resources strategy for the Group worldwide.

Mr. Anand said: “This is a new and important senior management role so we are delighted that Jackie, who brings a wealth of global human resources expertise, has joined. Her experience in workforce development, talent management, employee relations, training, and organisational design and development, especially in the insurance industry, will help us continue to attract, develop and retain talented people around the world as we continue to grow.”

Ms Richardson said: “I am excited be a part of Torus in taking on the responsibility of recruiting, retaining and developing the Group’s most important asset – its people. Ms Richardson joins Torus from Synovate, a global market research firm, where she was Executive VP, HR for The Americas. She has over 20 years of experience in Human Resources in the insurance industry, her most recent role being Vice President for Property and Casualty HR at CNA, where she oversaw HR strategies for their P&C operations globally. In addition to an undergraduate degree, she holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Consulting Psychology from Harvard and her professional credentials include the successful completion of the Human Resources Executive Program at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.
