Torus Targets New Business in Europe

Continuing the rollout of its Continental European operation, Torus, the global specialty insurer, has appointed Esther Fittinghoff-Hansen as Professional Lines Manager and Kurt Fleischmann as Senior Casualty Underwriter. Based in Cologne and Zurich, offices acquired by Torus following the acquisition of Glacier Insurance AG, both will target buyers in Austria, Germany and Switzerland for their respective product lines.

Ms. Fittinghoff-Hansen will lead Professional Lines underwriting for the three countries, reporting to Marc van der Veer, Chief Underwriting Officer of Specialty Europe. She is supported by recently appointed Senior Professional Lines Underwriter, Tobias Klein.

Reporting to Head of Continental Casualty, Thomas Guesde, Mr. Fleischmann will develop the countries’ Casualty underwriting.

“These appointments are essential to develop our operations in countries fundamental to our long-term strategy in Europe,” said Richard Etridge, the former Chief Executive of Glacier Insurance, now Torus Chief Operating Officer for Continental Europe. “We are committed to servicing customers across Europe; that is why we hire local experts experienced in their local markets and products.”

He added, “As part of the Zurich and Cologne-based teams, both will maximise synergies stemming from the acquisition and integration of Glacier.”

Including Ms. Fittinghoff-Hansen and Mr. Fleischmann, Torus has made 12 senior strategic local appointments in Europe since January this year.

Ms. Fittinghoff-Hansen joins Torus from AXA Corporate Solutions where she was a Financial Lines underwriter. Previous roles during her insurance career have encompassed errors and omissions, fidelity and financial institutions underwriting, as well as specialty claims at AXA and Chubb Insurance. She is a Law graduate of the Universities of Amsterdam and Cologne and holds a Masters in European Studies.

Mr. Fleischmann joins Torus from Ace where he was most recently in charge of developing the European Portfolio from their London and Dublin offices. With over 30 years of casualty experience he has worked at the insurance operations of Swiss Re, Zurich Insurance Company and Winterthur International.

Torus Executive Risks Appoints Market Leader to Launch Professional Indemnity Platform

Torus Executive Risks Limited (TER), the joint venture between Nexus Underwriting Management and global specialty insurer Torus, has entered the Professional Lines market with the appointment of industry renowned David Robinson as Professional Indemnity Manager.

Mr. Robinson joins TER from Lloyd’s Syndicate 3210 of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group, a leading Professional Indemnity insurer, bringing with him over 20 years of PI experience. Leveraging the success to date, Torus Executive Risks’ PI platform aims to be recognised as the market’s new point of reference.”

Torus Launches Environmental Platform

  • Specialty insurer continues expansion of specialist product offerings for small and midsized companies in the US
  • Continually changing EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) regulation heightens need for environmental insurance

Following the establishment of Management Liability, Healthcare and Renewable Energy practices earlier this year, Torus, the global specialty insurer, has appointed sector specialist Adrianne Vigueras as Vice President to develop tailored environmental products for small and midsized businesses in the US.

Based in Torus’ Jersey City office, Ms. Vigueras will also develop non-environmental programs for contractors, manufacturers and premises exposures. She will also work closely with Torus’ Renewable Energy and Healthcare teams to enable seamless coverage by adding environmental components to their products.

The timely launch of the new platform comes as continually changing EPA regulations, such as the lead-safe certification rule that came into effect on April 22 this year, are increasing awareness amongst business owners of the need for environmental insurance to protect their businesses.

“Insureds have woken up to the fact that environmental insurance should be part of their general liability portfolio,” said Linc Trimble, Head of US Excess Casualty and to whom Ms. Vigueras will report. “Adrianne is an expert on environmental risk issues. Along with Torus’ well developed service infrastructure and highly experienced claim centre, her niche expertise ensures Torus is ready to meet this growing need.”

Ms. Vigueras has over 25 years of insurance experience, 20 of which were centred on environmental insurance designing straightforward programs for real estate transfers to complex Fortune 500 placements. Prior to Torus she managed her own consulting company, CEC Consultants, which provided environmental expertise to insurance brokers. She attended Hunter College and studied environmental law at the Practicing Law Institute, both in New York.
