Torus Appoints Global Head of Project Management

Torus, the global specialty insurer, has appointed Michael Kim to the newly created role of Global Head of Project Management, based in Jersey City. He will also be a member of Torus’ Executive Management Team.

Reporting to Naveen Anand, Global Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive of Torus Specialty and Chief Underwriting Officer for U.S. Specialty, Mr. Kim will help drive the numerous major project initiatives that have arisen as a result of Torus’ growth strategy since launch in 2008. Commenting on the appointment, Mr. Anand said, “Michael’s varied background will be a real asset to Torus. He has extensive background in consulting, including stints with Towers Perrin, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and First Manhattan Consulting Group, and most recently served as Chief Technology Officer of The Hartford’s Property Casualty Company.”

Mr. Kim said, “Building modern systems and processes to help position Torus as a leading specialty company worldwide is an exciting opportunity. I’m very much looking forward to working with new colleagues at the forefront of the industry to drive Torus’ growth by exceeding clients’ expectations.”

Torus Appoints UK Head of Casualty

Torus, the global specialty insurer, continues to expand its Casualty platform with the appointment of David Whyman as Senior Vice President, UK Head of Casualty, based in London. Reporting to David Perez, President and CUO of Global Casualty, Mr. Whyman will develop offerings for the London Market.

Mr. Whyman’s casualty career spans over 27 years, all in the London Market. Prior to Torus, he was a director at Aon, focusing on excess liability placements for North American domiciled risks. He has also held senior underwriting positions at Liberty Mutual Insurance Europe Ltd and Zurich Specialties.

Mr. Perez said, “Current market conditions for casualty business are tough for insurance carriers as numerous carriers are competing for the same accounts. But in view of some recent significant loss events, there’s evidence that pricing will need to increase.

“David’s appointment confirms our commitment to the London Market and firmly establishes Torus Casualty in the UK. He has extensive relationships within the brokerage community as well as a broad level of underwriting experience. He also knows the importance of delivering high levels of service, risk assessment and product customisation, which is particularly important with current conditions in mind.”

Mr. Whyman said, “Torus Casualty will differ from other carriers in the UK – as it is doing so already in Bermuda, the US and Continental Europe – by becoming a key insurance partner for brokers and clients, despite significant competition. What has been fundamental to Torus Casualty’s success so far will also be central to our success in London – a willingness to work flexibly with brokers and customers as well as developing new and innovative liability solutions.”

Torus Enhances U.S. Regional Management

Torus, the global specialty insurer, has appointed Mathew G. Munson as VP Regional Operating Officer. Based in Chicago, he will enhance Torus’ presence in America’s Central and Midwest regions through directing local relationship management and driving superior service delivery for clients and brokers. He reports to Naveen Anand, Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Munson brings over 30 years of business development experience to Torus, 11 years of which were at Zurich North America, from where he joins. His most recent position at Zurich was Regional Vice President for programs and direct markets, a position he has held since 2007. Prior to joining Zurich, he had management and marketing responsibilities with Liberty Mutual, McClarens Toplis and Safety National.

Commenting on this strategic appointment Mr. Anand said: “We have ambitious targets for Torus in the US. Matt is an industry veteran and will engage closely with the local broker community to deliver the service levels buyers and brokers require, whilst helping to develop our business profitably.”

Mr. Munson is the ninth significant industry name to join Torus in the US since the end of 2009, including five appointed to enhance service levels as part of Torus’ broker focus strategy to drive growth.
